Relationship + Sex Therapy
Relationship Therapy
We specialize in working with queer partners—same-sex couples and those relationships in which one or more partners are trans or gender-expansive. Whether your relationship has hit a rough patch or you’re preparing to move to the next level, we can help.
How We Do Relationship Therapy
Most insurance companies do not cover “couples therapy.” Instead, they cover “Family Psychotherapy.” This means that the treatment is focused on an identified patient (one of the partners) and the goals of therapy are to eliminate the distress this patient experience through addressing family conflict. The goal in Family Psychotherapy is not to improve the relationship; it is to decrease the psychological distress of the patient.
To ethically provide this service, we require that at least one partner in the relationship must engage in individual psychotherapy at our practice if using their insurance. That way, the individual and relationship therapist can work together to develop appropriate treatment goals that will lead to the best outcomes for all parties.
Clients who pay out of pocket for relationship therapy are not required to engage in individual treatment within the practice, though we still recommend all parties participate in individual therapy simultaneously.
Sex Therapy
We have AASECT-trained therapists on staff who can help you address sexual issues—either alone or in the context of your relationship. *Sex therapy is rarely covered by insurance.
